Despite its’ title “Sex and the Citadel: Intimate Life In A Changing Arab World,” the new book published by former immunologist Shereen El Feki on sexuality in the Arab World, focuses mostly on Egypt. Feki is herself half Egyptian and some of the accounts of her Egyptian interviewees make for depressing reading. A young gay man tells of how he was arrested and raped while a young woman explains how her father arranged a series of “temporary marriages” for her with wealthy Gulf tourists. However Feki can also write with wit meaning that you sometimes don’t know whether to laugh or cry. I recommend this book especially if you are interested in learning about sexuality in the Middle East and also for those who enjoy anecdotes or unusual statistics – you won’t be able to put it down.
You should be able to obtain a copy via Kindle, Amazon or any good bookseller.
